Our solution to the BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE takes the best of the available technologies which delivers visual impact to retain human interest, audio and printed material to offer the broadest reach to meet virtually everyone's educational and understanding thresholds. This multimedia delivery vehicle will deliver HIV and AIDS education, awareness and prevention material which can be re-heard, re-read and re-seen, encouraging voluntary adherence, continued learning and re-enforcement of the devastating effects HIV and AIDS can have on not only themselves but their babies, wives and their country.
The complete solution was a part of the initial proposal that was submitted to DoD, and reviewed with the BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE HIV and AIDS Medical Advisory committee. Assistant Chief of Staff, Brigadier Tiroyamodimo, Commanding Officer of Medical Corps, Col. William Matshwa and Botswana Defence Force National AIDS Coordinating Agency representative, Major General Oitsile were all briefed and provided input to our data collection. The ResourceLinC HIV and AIDS education program is comprehensive and specifically geared to behavioral modification towards the reduction of risky activities that could lead to contracting this deadly disease.
Our solution took into consideration, input from the Minister of Health, the Executive Director of the National AIDS Coordinating Committee and the various US Embassy contacts.
The HIV/ AIDS content will be a blend of a program by FHI Uniformed Services which was developed and tested by the militaries of Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Eritrea and Zambia and material developed by the New Jersey AIDS Education Training Center. This content will/ has been modified by the BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE trainers to ensure cultural accuracy and sensitivity.
The BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE has provided us with military designated trainees, who will provide train-the-trainer and peer-to-peer military outreach HIV/ AIDS prevention. These trainees will frequently engage with individuals and groups to conduct intervention activities.
Peer education implies a role-model method of education in which trained, self-identified members of the military client population will provide HIV/AIDS education to their behavioral peers. This method provides an opportunity for individuals to perceive themselves as empowered by helping persons in their communities and social networks, thus supporting their own health enhancing practices.
At the same time, the use of peer educators sustains intervention efforts in the community long after the professional service providers are gone.
This training will deliver a strong message that they have the ability to kill their families and to compromise the security of their beloved country.
